  70.    Yes, there are several HT manufacturers.  Offhand, I know that you
  71. can get GMRS HT's at Radio Shack, among others.

  73.    As for modifying an amateur rig - it's illegal, because the rig
  74. wouldn't be type-accepted by the FCC for GMRS use.

  91. inside the ICF-2010? What kinds of filter can I use? Can I use filters for           
  92. say the ICOM (FL-series) or Kenwood. 1) Will these work, 2) Will these fit?

  182. I also have been eyeing this radio.  A friend of mine has one and is
  183. happy as a clam with it.  He loves showing off the scanner capabilities.
  184. The one negative that concerns me is Icom itself.  Over the last couple
  185. months, I've been trying to decide on an HF rig and naturally I started
  186. off wanting to consider Icom.  Can you believe that despite FOUR phone
  187. calls to their literature hot-line over this period, plus another couple
  188. calls to some of their other numbers, I have still not been able to get
  189. one single sheet of product literature?!
  190.  
  191. At one point, I did get an Icom rep on the phone and when I asked him
  192. to sell me on his product, about all he could say (this was about the
  193. 765) was that it had a great receiver.  Pumping him for "tell me more",
  194. there was no more.  He confessed he really didn't know his competition
  195. to be able to compare their strengths.  When I mentioned my frustration
  196. at not getting any literature, he promised (this was about 2 1/2 weeks
  197. ago) that he _personally_ would send me some.  Nothing.
  198.  
  199. Kenwood wasn't much better, though they did send a couple pages (that
  200. was it) on a couple of their products.
  201.  
  202. Yaesu really put out some effort.  I called them several times with
  203. nitpicky questions on a number of issues and each time was immediately
  204. connected to very knowledgable people.  For example, when I asked about
  205. the CAT (RS-232 control i/f), I was immediately switched over to a
  206. fellow who was ready to talk bit-level about how the control packets
  207. were laid out.  And no problem at all with literature!  They sent
  208. piles!  Even included world time zone maps, etc.
  209.  
  210. Since then, I've had several conversations with dealers and end-users
  211. who've confirmed to me that the impressions I've gotten are not atypical.
  212. One fellow told me a story of wanting a part for an ancient Yaesu rig
  213. and getting charged only $2 for it even though obviously Yaesu had to
  214. do some scrambling to even find it.  Another told me a story of frying
  215. his mobile thru misuse and getting it fixed (in days!) for free by
  216. Yaesu.
  217.  
  218. As you might guess, I have certainly decided that for an HF rig, I'm
  219. definitely going with Yaesu and, in fact, am heading up to HRO in
  220. Salem, NH later today to pick up the FT-990.  When time comes (shortly :-)
  221. for an HT, I admit that the technical features of the Icom unit
  222. (esp. the scanner) may overcome my other concerns about them, but
  223. honestly, it does matter to me to be dealing with a company that
  224. acts like they really want my business.

  227. hearing a summary if you have time.

  245. This would be in-band, not crossband, repeating.  That is hard to do
  246. without a bulky duplexer and fixed frequencies.  I would be surprised
  247. to see it in _any_ HT.
